Regarding the questionable line, “Though I passed away in silence”, it is not thought that the speaker has literally died and is speaking from the grave to his former beloved, as if this were Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II, Prelude and Fugue No. 4 in C-Sharp Minor, BWV 873: Prelude, "the Waltz of the Sad Ghosts". It is taken that he withdrew, disappeared from the beloved’s life, or let the relationship die silently. In other words, the phrase refers to an emotional or relational departure, not a physical death.
